I've written about Ben Howard before, and I really like to show what people I've "discovered" have done! I heard this on the radio (gasp) one evening as I was driving from somewhere to somewhere else.
"Darling you're with me,
always around me.
Only love, only love.
Darling I feel you, under my body.
Only love, only love."
"If I find my way through the darkest of days, Will I laugh about the things that kept me awake? But if my greatest fears paints itself so crystal clear, Will I run away or will I hide? And if I don't come home tonight, Just know I tried my best to fight. Please don't think I plan to lose to the night. And curse the moon so dull and bright, My heavy soul can't stand the light. It burns me straight to the bones, my bones In the desert sun I watched my nerves come undone. One by one my strings they tangled into knots. And ever since that day, deep in Santa Fe. I've learned to hate myself for giving everything away. And if I don't come home tonight, Just know I tried my best to fight. Please don't think I plan to lose to the night. And curse the moon so dull and bright, My heavy soul can't stand the light. It burns me straight to the bones, my bones And if I don't come home tonight, Just know I tried my best to fight. Please don't think I plan to lose to the night. And curse the moon so dull and bright, My heavy soul can't stand the light. It burns me straight to the bones, my bones"
The Front Bottoms are a two-piece indie-pop acoustic band based out of New Jersey. The band was formed with three members in 2006: Brian Sella (vocals, guitar, lyricist), Brian Uychich (keyboard, vocals) and Matt Uychich (drums). However, in the year 2010 Brian Uychich left the band to concentrate on school full-time. Brian Uychich was replaced by Drew Villafuerte (bass, keys)
Ben Nichols is the front-man for the alternative-country Memphis, Tennessee-based gig, Lucero. The Last Pale Light in the West EP was released in 2009, and showcases Nichol's unique voice. The song was recently featured on season 4, episode 6 of AMC's The Walking Dead: Live Bait.
Rosanne Machado accidentally started a viral sensation when she released her homemade songs on the internet. Her crisp, clean sound resulted the song "Darkest Horse" being featured on the season finale of OTH, Season 8. The sensation spread into an invitation to perform at SXSW 2012, and she has since been a wildfire across the world, originating in Curitiba, Southern Brazil, using the accelerants of pop-country tunes and heart-filled lyrics to blaze across everyone's hearts and ears.
North Carolina is home from the lovely Bowerbirds; the foothills of the Appalachians. This plays out musically, adding in an element that originates high on a hill and echoes down to us flatlanders. This song, along with most of the rest of theirs, have a folk element that is absolutely breath-taking!
I like One Tree Hill, guys, okay?!
"My conscience is an avalanche; majestic, bewildering, and wholly careless."
Josh Pyke is an Indie singer-songwriter located in Sydney, Australia, who has been compared to the likes of Elliott Smith, with his songs that put human emotion under a microscope, and shows that they're rather complex, abstract, and fascinating.
Elvis Perkin's (LA, CA) song blend melancholy and uplifting in the same capsule. With his father's death from AIDS in 1992, and his mother being on 1 of the 2 planes that hit the World Trade Center, it's not hard to see why. Though I forget your name; I remember your sweet face. 'Til Doomsday, fiddle, I. Man, I went wild last night; Oh, I went feeling alright;
Scott Matthews started off with an ambivalent relationship with music, but obviously reversed that situation. Maybe it is Britain's magic, or maybe it's just situational, but he obviously pulled out of it and has mastered the art of mellow and chill and embodied it in song form, with "Eyes Wider Than Before."
Passenger's Let Her Go showcases Mike Rosenberg's melodically-clean picking, his crisp, clear voice and his amazing choice of subjects, as well as his song-writing abilities.
"Love comes slow,
and it goes so fast."
"Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low."
Cloud Boat is a British Indie-rock band that sounds so clear that it could echo for miles and miles. Reminiscent of other Brit rock bands, such as the Beatles and Oasis, this band is a new-age spin on the mysticism that Britain's island offers to the rest of the world.
Mark Lanegan is an American singer-songwriter. His claim to fame was Bubblegum, but he also collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age. His voice is soaked in whiskey and cigar smoke, and aged to perfection.
Seether is an American Post-grunge band that I first heard when I was in middle school. This being a trying time in anyone's life, I latched onto it (and several other bands). This song (which was the original and less-famous version) without Amy Lee is a completely different song. I feel that the mood of the song, the rawness of it, is better captured in the acoustic guitar and the lack of anything behind Shaun Morgan's voice other than passion and pain.
New Moon is a post-humously released album, containing previously unreleased tracks and a compilation of B-sides. Elliott Smith was an American singer-songwriter from Nebraska, whose voice is comparable to the thinness of spider-webs, being delicate and thin, yet strong as steel.
He suffered (debatable choice of words) from depression and the bulk of his writing is based around the topic. It would appear that his death was self-inflicted, as he received two stab-wounds to the chest after an argument with his girlfriend, self-inflicted. Near him was a post-it note which read, "I'm so sorry---love, Elliott. God forgive me."
The Weepies are a folk band made famous by their plug on Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Scrubs, and the like. Operating out of California, the couple love what they do, and you hear it transferring into the realm of their music. Their first album, Say I am You was the best-selling folk record in 8 countries!
"When it all seems out of place, the world spins madly on."
John McCauley, from Deer Tick, has a voice influenced STRONGLY by both Hank Williams, Sr., and brandy--in equal portions. This song is a perfect description of what happens when you daydream about someone, and it's perfect, as is John's voice and adept picking.
